Top Rain Shortened Red Cedar Speedway Night

Menomonie WI, May 16 – Scott Gilberts in the Late
Models and Aaron Wilson in the Super Stocks were the
lone feature race winners on a long and wet Friday
night at the Red Cedar Speedway. After a beautiful
day , rain arrived as the second Modified heat race
was on the track which stopped the action. After a
long, protracted period of repacking the track
during which the rain started and stopped several
times, the action was finally able to be resumed.
The rest
of the qualifying events were completed and the two
feature races were able to be completed before the
curfew hour hit. The feature races not completed
will be added on to next week’s show.
Gilberts
started on the pole for the Late Model headliner and
quickly put distance on the field on the heavy and
blinding fast track. Gilberts got away from Ron
Schreiner on the green but Brent Larson used the
inside to move past Schreiner and take over second.
A hard battle for third was in progress as Mike
Goodremote looked high and low as he tried to work
past Schreiner.
Gilberts
was able to extend his lead to nearly a straightaway
when the entertaining battle for third took a turn
as the competitors got together in turn one with
Schreiner spinning as a result. The restart saw
Schreiner restored to his spot while Goodremote went
to the tail of the field.
Once
again Gilberts powered away from the field as
neither Larson nor anyone else was able to stay with
him on this night. Rick Hanestad powered to the
outside of Schreiner on the green to take over third
with Keith Foss moving in to challenge Schreiner for
a spot. That’s the way they finished with Kelly
Anderson taking over fifth after Foss dropped out
near the end of the event.
The
Super Stock feature was much closer with Wilson
having to endure a race long challenge from Jason
Forehand to take home the win. Wilson started on the
outside of row one and pulled past Tom Karis to take
the early lead. Forehand followed up from the second
row and quickly pulled in behind Wilson. The battle
for third was a heavy one as Karis jockeyed with Tim
Borgeson, Greg Nippoldt, Steve Hallquist and Shawn
Huse for the spot with Mike Keller and Eric Olson
also become players for the position.
Wilson
was under the gun as Forehand tried to get under
him. Aaron was struggling in turn four and at least
he slid high with Forehand able to get under him
down the front chute. Both times Wilson nailed turn
one though, and was able to fight back into the
lead.
Borgeson
looked strong until he slid high in tricky corner
four also and he lost several positions. Huse got
moved out of the groove but he fought his way back
into contention too.
The
yellow flew with two laps remaining which set up a
sprint to the finish. Wilson was good on the start
and put a couple of car lengths on Forehand. Huse
made a bold move to the high side and got past Karis
for a spot. Forehand made a last lap charge but
Wilson held him off for the win. Huse tried to
challenge for second but couldn’t pull it off while
Keller slipped into the top five on the last tour
also.
Friday, May 23rd
will be a big night at the Red Cedar Speedway. The
show will be sponsored by Gilberts of Sand Creek and
C.T. Enterprises of Sand Creek and the pre holiday
race will be highlighted by makeup features from
this week’s water out for the Modifieds, Midwest
Modifieds and Pure Stocks. A full show will of
course be also held after those three races are
completed for all five classes. Race time will be 7
p.m.
